Krista Doebel-Hickok wins Hill Climb Championships; Carmen Small top ten at Tour of Norway

In a tremendous weekend for Cylance Pro Cycling, Krista Doebel-Hickok won the U.S. National Hill Climb Championship as Carmen Small placed top ten in UCI Ladies Tour of Norway.

For Doebel-Hickok, the hill climb victory was a sweet reward after a season that sustained injuries, including a broken collarbone.  The race traveled up Pike Peak where the start line is located at 9,390 ft and the finish line is 156 turns, 12.42 miles later, with an average grade of 7%, and a gain in altitude of 4,725 ft to conclude at 14,115 ft. Doebel-Hickok made the climb in 1h 25m, and took the pro women’s title, becoming Cylance Pro Cycling’s first United States national champion of the 2016 season.

After a grueling three-day UCI stage race in Norway, Cylance Pro Cycling’s newest rider—U.S. Time Trial National Champion, Carmen Small—finished 6th in GC. Small finished 9th on Stage 1, 17th on Stage 2 and 6th on Stage 3, which resulted in 6th overall.

Stage 3 saw the peloton cover 115.8 km with 2 sprints and 2 QOM competitions. The Cylance Pro Cycling team were quick to attack early and often, however we had little success early on. Always looking to get away from the bunch, Doris Schweizer made a solo bid to get away 14 km into race, but the race was neutralized only seconds after her attack; the race ambulance was back with an earlier crash and the peloton was traveling unprotected.

After 11km of neutralized racing, the race was back on at 26km and over the first QOM the pace at the front split the peloton into three groups, with many riders never making it back into the lead group.

The second time up the QOM the peloton was again reduced to around 25 riders before three riders, including our Carmen Small were able to establish a solid break. Carmen's group was eventually brought back in and the second group on the road bridged back to peloton making a lead group of about 50 riders.

Coming into the finishing circuits, seven riders went clear on second last lap. Carmen was joined by a strong contingent of riders including the race leader, Lucinda Brand. The group of seven managed to stay away until the finish with Anouska Koster (Rabo-Liv) taking the win. Carmen Small would finish the stage 6th and move into 6th place overall with Lucinda Brand (Rabo-Liv) keeping her leader’s jersey.

“Race was good overall,” added Carmen, “but things got confusing in the finish with some riders sprinting and others expecting another lap. I really wanted it to stay away so I was the only non-Rabobank rider pulling. I'm disappointed because I felt really good today and wanted to win.”

"My team rode great again. They were always riding together and communicating well. We were in ever move and for sure the most aggressive team.  Rossella and Rachele helped me with the intermediate springs. The girls have a lot of fight; I just wish I could have delivered a result.”
