Cylance Pro Cycling continued the classics campaign with Samyn des Dames, a 100.5km race in Belgium from Quaregnon to Dour. The elements played a key role on the 25.1km Dour Circuit as cobbles, mud, wind and rain ensured the entire peloton would be tested. Each lap offered four pavé sectors that constantly split the field.
Attacks went early and often before the first pavé sector, but all were reeled back in by the peloton. The peloton was strung out single file through the cobbles with many riders dropped in small groups as it began to rain. “For today's race we had a few different cards to play and the plan was to go for the win,” added Director Sportif Manel Lacambra, “and that’s what the girls did.”
With 2 laps of the circuit remaining, Sheyla joined the definitive break of five riders with Amy Pieters (Boels-Dolmans), Romy Kasper (Ale-Cippolini), Tiffany Cromwell (Canyon-SRAM), and Jessy Druyts (Sport Vlaanderen-Etixx) quickly gaining 30” on the field as the rest of the Cylance Pro Cycling team worked to cover any attempts to bring them back. “When we saw that Sheyla was in this break,” continued Manel, “we knew this was a very good situation for us because we had a very good card to play up front, and still we had some different cards with Kirsten and the rest of our strong team in the field.” The gap continued to grow as the peloton suffered from lack of cohesion with Sheyla’s group gaining over 1’30” on the field with 40km remaining.
The wind and rain continued to challenge the chasing peloton but the rest of Cylance Pro Cycling continued to work together and cover attacks as they trusted Sheyla in the break. It became obvious that the break would last to the line, and the break continued to attack each other into the ultimate kilometers. Sheyla beat Pieters in a two-rider sprint taking the team’s 4th win of the season.
“At the final the other girls behind just needed to cover all of the attacks from other teams,” said Manel, “and in front Sheyla did an amazing job winning the final sprint, but the team was awesome.” Jasi and Kirsten came through in the second and third groups for 8th and 11th respectively on the day, proving that it was indeed the strength of the entire team that ensured Sheyla would take the victory. “I'm super impressed with my performance,” added Sheyla after the race, “but I've worked hard for it, so I'm enjoying the classics!”
This victory was extra special for Manel; “this victory make us very proud because she is one of our younger riders and we are very happy to see her progression with Cylance Pro Cycling everyday.”
