Stage 6 was the Queen Stage of the 2016 edition of the Giro Rosa and featured four categorized climb, including the summit finish up to the Madonna della Guardia. With 45km completed in the stage, we had a solo leader, Kasia Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) with 2 minutes on the pink jersey group that contained Krista Doebel-Hickok looking out for Doris Schweizer. The gap to the chasers dropped steadily as the loan leader reached the third climb of the day, the Passo Caprauna, now with only a minute on the Pink Jersey. Niewiadoma was soon joined by Mara Abbott (Wiggle-High5) and Evelyn Stevens (Boels-Dolmans) with a chase group with Megan Guarnier (Boels-Dolmans) just behind. Third group on the road contained Doris and several more chasers. With Abbott and Stevens joining Niewiadoma, the new lead group extended their lead to over 2 minutes with 40km to go. Slightly before the 3 leaders reached the base of the final climb they were caught by the first chase group and 12 riders hit the base of the final summit finish up to Madonna della Guardia. Evelyn Stevens patiently outlasted attacks from Mara Abbott before launching her own solo bid and taking the stage win with her teammate Megan Guarnier following in second place (now the new leader of the General Classification). This stage proved every bit as difficult as advertised and the gaps between the riders were very large. Krista added her report:
In the mountains, I stayed Doris to help as long as I could. When I was dropped, I found myself solo for 40+ km. I kept riding steady hard, until a group caught me at km 100.
I am still suffering from the 2 earlier crashes, but always ready to fight.
